Biography

Andrés Bernal is a bilingual scholar of public policy, heterodox economics, and leadership, with a robust background in teaching, research, political advising, and community engagement.

 

He began his academic journey at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, earning a B.A. in Philosophy and serving as President of the Philosophy Club. He continued with a Master’s in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego, where his thesis explored worker ownership in cooperative enterprises, and he served as a teaching assistant in participatory leadership courses.

 As a Public and Urban Policy Doctoral Student at The New School, Andrés has developed expertise in discourse analysis, climate policy, and heterodox economics. His doctoral work is complemented by a research fellowship at the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity and time as a visiting fellow at the University of Missouri-Kansas City department of Economics.

Andrés brings over five years of university teaching experience, having served as an adjunct lecturer at CUNY (School of Labor and Urban Studies, City College, Queens College), where he has taught courses on cooperative management and governance, urban politics, and public policy. He is also a community educator, curriculum developer and consultant to the Consortium for Worker Education. 

Beyond academia, Andrés has a rich record of political advising, contributing to campaigns such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) and Jessica Cisneros (TX-28), and holding leadership roles in civic organizations. He co-founded Public Money Action (501c4) and serves on the boards of LUPE Votes and the Centro de Pensamiento Vida, a Think Tank in Colombia, supporting heterodox policy development. His work spans scholarship, consulting, and advocacy, with publications ranging from peer-reviewed articles to Op-Eds in major outlets like HuffPost and Business Insider.
